Homosexuality in Today's Society

By Varina Sidley

---- An Introductory Word ----

A topic rarely encountered without a heated discussion and stubborn opinions, homosexuality is today still considered a social problem.  If nothing else the homosexual population in North America is still a fairly underground group of people due to the restrictions that have been placed upon them through out the years.  This webpage is designed to touch upon various aspects of homosexuality as it exists with a sociological outlook as to past, present, and how homosexual individuals could be less oppressed in the future.  You will look at how cross cultural differences can be useful in evaluating homosexuality and its relativity to deviance in North American society today and in the recent past.  Also, a short historical background is provided under the heading Gay Liberation Front.  This is to assist in understanding the evolution of social structure and how it is still pertinent to the present day.  The sexual revolution is also visited in this webpage as it is part of the process of constructionism in society, the revolution is the refusal of those constructions and restrictions.  Lastly a brief look at the American Psychiatric Association and its prior definition of homosexuality and the Gay Psychiatric Association (who lobbied to change it), to further understand the way societal constructions affect the mass population and the minory as well.
